The ocean around Tenerife stays relatively warm year-round thanks to its subtropical location. Water temperatures are usually around 19–20 °C (66–68 °F) in winter and gradually rise to about 23–24 °C (73–75 °F) in late summer and early autumn. Because the temperature changes only slightly throughout the year, scuba diving is possible in every season, typically with a 5 mm wetsuit in winter and a 3–5 mm suit in summer.
Diversion offers shore dives, Tenerife offers an amazing array of dive sites from shore. Most dive sites on the island can be reached by shore with a big selection of dive sites that are great for beginners with no current and shallow reefs as well as deeper dives for advanced divers.
Divers in Tenerife can explore volcanic underwater landscapes with lava formations, caves, and reefs created by the island’s unique geology. The waters are home to diverse marine life such as rays, moray eels, octopus, and colorful Atlantic fish, and lucky divers may even encounter sea turtles!
In the Canary Islands, whales and dolphins are commonly seen on boat trips, especially around Tenerife and La Gomera. However, diving or swimming with them is not allowed, because many species—such as the resident Short‑finned Pilot Whale populations—are protected.
